Unsigned
Japan, 18thcentury, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of upright rectangular form with rounded edges, finely decorated with gold hiramaki-e and aogai inlays on a lustrous roiro ground. The front shows a spider with an iridescent mother-of-pearl body behind a web that spins over the bottom and top case. A single spider’s web extends to the back where another finely decorated aogaI-inlaid spider is rappelling. The risers are finely decorated with gold takamaki-e foliage. The interior of roiro with gold fundame rims.

LENGTH 6.8 cm, HEIGHT 9.2 cm

Condition: Good condition. Some light crackling and losses to edges. Minor wear to the gold lacquer details as are to be expected.
Provenance: Ex-collection Albert Maroni. Albert Maroni (1852-1923) began collecting in the 1880s and is best known for his collection of Japanese prints, recognised by art historian Richard Lane in his book Images from the Floating World. He also assembled a collection of samurai art, netsuke, and inro.

Museum comparison:
Inro with spiders are exceedingly rare. Compare a related five-case roiro inro with aogai dragonfly, a spider and a web, dated to the 19th century, in the collection of the Musée Guimet, Paris, accession number EO 2226.
