Description

AN EARLY FOUR-CASE GOLD AND BLACK LACQUER INRO WITH LUNAR RABBITS

Unsigned
Japan, 17th to 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of upright rectangular form, finely decorated in gold and black takamaki-e and hiramaki-e against a gold-sprinkled roiro ground. The design features a hare on each side, each captured mid-leap across a body of water, framed by rocks, their surfaces delicately highlighted with kirigane flakes. The interior of nashiji with gold fundame rims.

LENGTH 5.1 cm, HEIGHT 6.3 cm

Condition: Very good age-related condition, with small chips to one bottom riser and a cord hole, small nibbles to the edges, as well as typical losses to the kirigane.

Hares or rabbits seen leaping across water usually allude to the legend of the lunar hare, a popular motif originating in China, where the rabbit is often portrayed as a companion of the Moon goddess Chang’e, constantly pounding the elixir of life for her.
