SOHAKU: AN EARLY FOUR-CASE LACQUER INRO WITH A SCENE FROM THE BATTLE OF THE UJI RIVER

Signed Sohaku 宗泊 saku 作
Japan, early 17th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of upright rectangular shape, finely decorated with polychrome takamaki-e on a dark brown ground. The composition depicts a scene from the Genpei Gassen (The battles between the Taira and Genji clans), depicting Sasaki Takatsuna and Kajiwara Kagesue at the Battle of the Uji River. Both figures are elaborately attired, their garments adorned with kirigane flakes and delicate mother-of-pearl inlays, attractively worn. Signed to the underside SOHAKU saku [made by Sohaku] and with a kakihan. The interior of nashiji with gold fundame rims.

With a small, turquoise-glazed ceramic ojime.

LENGTH 6.5 cm, HEIGHT 7.7 cm

Condition: Good age-related condition, with typical old wear and losses to the mother-of-pearl inlays, dents to the top and bottom, chips to a riser.
Provenance: Beaussant Lefèvre, Archeologie Art d’Asie, 7 July 2020, Paris, lot 169. French private collection, acquired from the above.

EUR 1,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
