Description

NANKEI AND MUNEAKI: A SUPERB SHIBAYAMA FOUR-CASE LACQUER INRO WITH MAPLE AND CHRYSANTHEMUMS

The lacquerwork by Nankei and the inlays by Shibayama Muneaki, signed Nankei 南溪 with seal rishi 李氏 and Muneaki 宗明
Japan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Of upright almost square form, bearing a bright gold kinji ground, finely worked with Shibayama inlays of raden (mother-of-pearl), stained horn and wood, depicting a maple tree above white chrysanthemums and their leaves, both emblematic of Autumn. Signed to the underside in gold lacquer NANKEI with a seal rishi and with a second inlaid signature tablet MUNEAKI. The interior compartments of nashiji with gold fundame rims.

LENGTH 6.5 cm, HEIGHT 8 cm

Condition: Very good condition, two tiny losses to inlays, slight wear to the upper and lower corners.

The Shibayama family began work in the late 1700s. Typical Shibayama work is encrusted with tiny pieces of ivory, pearl-shell, tortoiseshell, horn, and many other materials. These materials were often intricately carved or incised to produce the three-dimensional effect you can see here. Shibayama Muneaki was active during the latter half of the 19th century, during the Meiji era.

Auction comparison:
Compare a related four-case lacquer inro in Shibayama-style depicting birds and flowers, unsigned, dated to the Meiji Period, at Bonhams, Fine Japanese Art, 10 November 2016, London, lot 179 (sold for GBP 7,500).
