Description

A FINE SILVER TWO-CASE INRO WITH KANO SCHOOL PAINTINGS

Unsigned
Japan, c. 1830, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of almost square shape, exquisitely engraved kebori, simulating vivid brushstrokes, and detailed with flush inlays of shakudo, suaka, and gold on a fine silver ground. The design, copied from famous Kano school paintings, features a gracefully rendered crane, standing elegantly on one leg. Beside it, a tiny minogame (mythical long-tailed turtle) gazes up at the crane. The reverse presents a delicately carved pine sapling, set against the iconic rising sun inlaid in gold hirazogan, partly obscured by clouds. Together the imagery presented on this inro is evocative of new beginnings and longevity.

Each side bears an inscription indicating that the designs were copied from paintings by Kano Isen'in Naganobu (1775-1828) und Kano Seisen'in Osanobu (1796-1846), inscribed Genshosai Hogen 玄賞斎法眼 and kakihan and Kaishinsai Hogen 會心斎法眼 and kakihan.

With a fine silver ojime shaped as a lotus pod.

LENGTH 5.3 cm, HEIGHT 5.7 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor tarnishing and surface scratches, minor abrasions to the area around the rising sun.
