The ceramic netsuke beautifully lacquered in burgundy red, formed as a suribachi (mortar), the glaze pooling around the sides, the interior lacquered and inlaid with aogai to depict a variety of shells including a trumpet shell and two awabi (abalone) surrounded by seaweed. Remarkably, the sides are detailed with simulated cracks which are “repaired” in a traditional manner with metal clips. Two himotoshi underneath and signed CHOHEI.

DIAMETER 3.5 cm

Nomura Chohei(sai) was an important Japanese lacquer artist, appointed as an official lacquerer to the Shogun in 1776. His works often feature intricate designs and the application of various materials, including ceramic, lacquer, mother-of-pearl, as well as other materials, similar in conception to the works of Ogawa Haritsu (Ritsuo, 1663-1747) and his followers.

Literature comparison:
Compare three related manju netsuke by Chohei in the Tokyo National Museum, illustrated in Arakawa, Hirokazu (1983) The Go Collection of Netsuke, nos. 247-249.
