A FINE INLAID AND LACQUERED WOOD MANJU NETSUKE DEPICTING CHERRY BLOSSOMS

Published: Tomkinson, Michael, A Japanese Collection (1898), Volume I, p. 159, no. 302 (unillustrated).

The two-part tagayasan wood manju netsuke decorated to the front with a blossoming cherry branch, the branch and leaves inlaid in horn and tortoiseshell and the flowers lacquered in thick gold takamaki-e and inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Central himotoshi to the back, the cord attachment within.

DIAMETER 4 cm

Condition: Good condition. Small repair to the gold lacquer and one mother-of-pearl inlay re-attached.
Provenance: Collection Michael Tomkinson (1841-1921), Kidderminster, UK, paper label, no. 302. Dr. Franz Weber, Vienna, March 1967. The Papp Collection (no. 850), acquired from the above.
