MASATSUGU: A FINE YAMADA SCHOOL WOOD NETSUKE OF A RECUMBENT SIKA DEER

Japan, Yamada, Ise province, second half of the 19th century

A finely carved wood netsuke of a recumbent deer, its head raised and its antlers drawn back for compactness, the skin mottled and with finely incised hairwork, the eyes inlaid dark. Natural himotoshi through the legs and signed MASATSUGU – a pupil of Masanao of Yamada.

LENGTH 4.1 cm

Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear.
Provenance: From the Mark and Elizabeth Harding Collection, Kimberley, South Africa, acquired at Paul Champkins in 2015.

Compare a closely related wood netsuke of a deer, unsigned, dated to the 19th century, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 10.211.1999.
