Description

SHUJI: A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF A TORTOISE AND YOUNG

By Shuji, signed Shuji 秋次
Japan, Echigo Province, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Naturalistically carved, the parent moving its legs in a walking movement, while its offspring hitches a ride on its back, the carapaces neatly incised. The eyes of both reptiles are inlaid with dark horn pupils. Signed to the underside within an inlaid tortoiseshell plaque SHUJI, the typical himotoshi running through a rear limb to the center of the plastron.

LENGTH 4.7 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor expected wear and very light nibbling to edges.
Provenance: From the Mark and Elizabeth Harding Collection, South Africa.

The artist belongs to the enigmatic group of Echigo carvers, other noted members being Shuzan Yasusada and Shuya. Furthermore, comparisons to Hidari Issan’s work further strengthen the connection between the carvers of Echigo and Iwashiro, which are neigboring provinces.

Literature comparison:
For a closely related wood netsuke of a walking turtle, by Shuya, see Barry Davies Oriental Art (1994) The Netsuke Collection of W.G Bosshard Part 1, no. 60. For a closely related wood netsuke of a turtle and young, by Hidari Issan, see Bandini, Rosemary (2020) The Larry Caplan Collection of Japanese Netsuke, no. 40. Note the similar carving style and the identical style of himotoshi running through the rear limb.
