Description

MINKO: A RARE WOOD NETSUKE OF A RAT CATCHER

By Tanaka Juntoku Minko (1735-1816), signed Minko 岷江 and kakihan
Japan, Tsu, early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Boldly carved, the rat catcher squatting before a box, the left hand opening the cover as he discovers that the rat has escaped, his left hand holding a bamboo stick which reaches back to the rat that is clambering up his back. His face with a humorous expression, the mouth in a strenuous grin and showing his tongue. Natural himotoshi through the arms and legs and with the signature MINKO and the artist’s kakihan.

HEIGHT 3.6 cm

Condition: Good condition with minor wear, a small repair to the corner of the loin cloth at the base, tiny nicks, and light surface scratches.
Provenance: From a private collection in Northern Germany.

Auction comparison:
The subject appears to be rare by Minko. Compare a related wood netsuke of an oni as a rat catcher, by Tanaka Minko, dated to the late 18th century, at Bonhams, Fine Japanese Art, 12 November 2015, London, lot 17 (sold for GBP 2,750).
