Description

MINKO: A WOOD NETSUKE OF AN ONI AT SETSUBUN

By Tanaka Juntoku Minko (1735-1816), signed Minko 岷江
Japan, Tsu, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Amusingly carved in the form of a crouching oni, his dark horn-inlaid eyes wide with alarm as he shields his head from the wrath of the crowd pelting him with beans during the New Year festival. A few stray beans, having struck their mark, remain visible on his back and side. His contorted, muscular body is intricately detailed, clad only in a short loincloth. Natural himotoshi and signed MINKO.

HEIGHT 3.5 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, expected traces of use, a tiny old chip to one of the fingers on the upper hand.

The Setsubun festival is celebrated during the first day of spring and includes the rite of oni-yarai or mame-maki, where roasted beans are thrown at oni to rid the coming year of any demons and disease-bringing spirits. The present netsuke was likely carved as a talisman for Setsubun.
