Description

A GROUP LOT WITH A FIVE-STRIPE AND A SEVEN-STRIPE CHUNG DZI BEAD

Tibet, 19th century or earlier. Each of elongated tubular form, with one bead featuring five stripes skillfully etched to the surface of the light hued agate. The other displays seven stripes etched onto a naturally banded agate, accented by darker mineral inclusions. Both with central drilling allowing for suspension as a pendant.

Provenance: Old Austrian private collection.
Condition: With a crack to the center of one bead. Otherwise, good condition with some losses to the etchings. Typical traces of use and age-related minor wear.

Weight: 13 g – 17 g
Dimensions: Length 4.8 cm – 5.4 cm

Chung Dzi beads are characterized by striped or banded patterns that often form naturally within the agate. They are traditionally believed to provide stability, grounding energy, spiritual benefit, and protection to the wearer, making them a popular choice among Tibetan monks and practitioners of Vajrayana Buddhism. They are most often worn as protective amulets and are sometimes ground into a powder for use in traditional Tibetan medicine. The artisans who make the Dzi embellish the lines and shapes of the beads using ancient methods such as darkening with plant sugar and heat, bleaching and etching white lines with natron, and protecting certain areas with fat, clay, wax, or a similar substance.

The Five-Stripe Dzi bead is believed to symbolize balance, harmony, and the five elements, earth, water, fire, air, and space, creating a connection between the wearer and the natural forces of the universe. It is often associated with strength, stability, and success, making it a powerful talisman for personal growth and resilience. In Tibetan culture, the number five also represents the Five Dhyani Buddhas, signifying wisdom, transformation, and spiritual awakening.

The Seven-Stripe Dzi bead are associated with spiritual insight, success, and power. The number seven holds deep significance in Buddhism, representing the Seven Factors of Enlightenment: mindfulness, investigation, energy, joy, tranquility, concentration, and equanimity. A seven-striped Dzi is believed to bring balance and guidance, helping the wearer achieve personal and professional success while maintaining inner harmony. In addition, this pattern is thought to correspond to the Seven Treasures of Buddhism: faith, discipline, generosity, wisdom, morality, patience, and knowledge.
