拍品描述
Published & Exhibited: Ben Janssens Oriental Art, Landscapes, London, 1-10 November 2018, p. 78-79, no. 32.China, Guangzhou. The rectangular panel is composed of several shaped mother-of-pearl plaques, each finely carved and neatly incised to depict a palace garden with two literati on the right backed by trees, rockwork, and a fence, and a musician playing the qin behind a brick wall, visible through the circular window. The scene is framed by a rope-twist border surrounded by six floral cartouches depicting birds perched on fruiting branches against a lozenge-diapered ground. Provenance: Ben Janssens Oriental Art, London, 2018. Ben Janssens opened his eponymous gallery in 1996 in London, specializing in early Chinese art. Previously he had been a director at Spink & Son. He also served as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of TEFAF Maastricht. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, the rope twist frame with few tiny cracks. Few minuscule losses, some elements probably re-adhered.Weight: 247.2 g (incl. frame) Dimensions: Size 25.9 x 14.2 cm (incl. frame)Set within a later wooden frame. (2)This delicately carved panel was probably once intended as the cover of a box. Such panels were made in the Guangzhou area in Southern China as popular export products during the later Qing dynasty.Literature comparison: Compare a related gold mounted mother-of-pearl box, dated late 18th century, at Sotheby's Amsterdam, 12 May 2003, lot 153. Two Qing-dynasty carved clamshells with figures in a riverside town, comparable in the low-relief carving and the incised detail, but made of a whole piece of clamshell, are in the Muwen Tang collection, see Simon Kwan, Chinese Mother-of-Pearl, The Muwen Tang Collection Series, Hong Kong, 2009, pp. 254-257.Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's London, 13 June 2018, lot 66Price: GBP 6,000 or approx. EUR 10,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing: A Chinese carved mother-of-pearl rectangular tea caddy, 19th centuryExpert remark: Compare the fine carving and incision work and the layering of the individual pieces. Note the form, floral subject, and the size (25.5 x 17 x 15 cm).
