The first cover sits tight.-The embroidery shows soiling, losses, loose thread and minor tears.Weight: 2.5 kg Dimensions: Size 36 x 28.5 x 24.8 cmFurther fittings:1. The box is fitted with a brass lock cover in the form of a butterfly, complete with a key, and the sides are set with two metal loop handles. 2. The interior of the box is lined with lithographed paper featuring squirrels and butterflies amid flowers, vines, and leaves. 3. Inside, a matching pewter tea caddy with two covers is housed.4. The top of the tea caddy is fitted with an embroidered silk fabric casing, finely decorated with two scholars surrounded by gourds on vines. (5)Literature comparison:Compare a closely related mother-of-pearl and lacquer box in the Peabody Museum, Salem. This can be dated exactly to 1836 through a letter which details its presentation in that year, illustrated in Carl Crossman, The China Trade, Woodbridge, 1988, pl. 157, p. 279.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's London, 14 January 2021, lot 54Price: GBP 1,638 or approx. EUR 2,600 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing: A Chinese Export mother-of-pearl inlaid black lacquer tea chest, circa 1840Expert remark: Compare the closely related form, decoration, and size (37.5 x 29 x 26.5 cm).
