拍品描述
China, 16th-17th century. The interior of this gilt-bronze cloisonne vessel is richly decorated with four cranes in vibrant enamels—two standing on one leg, one spreading its wings, and one striding forward. They are set amid red, white, green, and yellow lotus and prunus blossoms against a deep blue background, framed by a white-ground foliate band and green and red-ground lappet borders.Provenance: Bonhams Hong Kong, 2 December 2021, lot 44, estimate HKD 80,000 or approx. EUR 11,000 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. The private collection of Jules Speelman, London, United Kingdom. Jules Speelman, a world-renowned dealer and collector of East Asian art, has over 60 years of experience. He joined his late father, Alfred, in 1964, continuing a family business that dates back three generations to 19th-century Holland and later expanded to England. Originally dealing in European antiques, A & J Speelman gradually shifted its focus to Asian art, particularly figurative sculpture and works of art from the past 2,000 years. Under Jules Speelman's direction, the firm is now among the foremost in the field. In 2024, the 28-lot sale of the Jules Speelman Collection at Bonhams totaled €15.2 million, far exceeding its €4.2 million estimate. Asaph Hyman, Global Head of Chinese Ceramics & Works of Art at Bonhams, praised Speelman as 'one of the greatest and most respected dealers and collectors,' renowned for his keen eye for rarity and quality. Condition: Very good condition with some old wear and expected manufacturing irregularities, including pitting to the enamel, small losses and associated old fills, minute dents, light wear to gilt.Weight: 787 g Dimensions: Diameter 32.9 cmThe white-ground cavetto is decorated with plumes of prunus blossoms and birds, while the everted rim features a lozenge-shaped band. The blue exterior is adorned with alternating lotus and prunus blossoms. Gilt-bronze wires form intricate ornamental patterns, with a notable lotus motif on the base, enhancing the overall refinement.Cranes have symbolized longevity, immortality, and wisdom in Chinese culture since ancient times, often depicted as celestial beings guiding souls to the heavens. During the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), they became emblems of high moral character, nobility, and official rank, frequently appearing in paintings, ceramics, and cloisonne enamelware. They also adorned the rank badges (buzi) of high-ranking civil officials, signifying virtue and prestige within the imperial court.Literature comparison: Compare a related cloisonne phoenix basin, dated to the late Ming dynasty, illustrated in the Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Enamels 1, Beijing, 2011, no. 170. Two Ming dynasty cloisonne enamel basins decorated with phoenixes from the 15th and 16th centuries are illustrated by H. Brinker and A.
