拍品描述
Nepal. Depicting the four-armed deity seated in dhyanasana at the center on a throne flanked by mythical beasts, the primary hands holding a vessel and a lotus, and the secondary hands raised holding a mala and a script, flanked by smaller figures of Ganapati and Mahakala seated on their own bases, all supported on a tiered plinth centered by a figure of Tara seated below a kirthimukha, and backed by an elaborate reticulated multi-level flaming mandorla with a Garuda, nagas, and makaras, and a small figure of Amitabha Buddha.Provenance: From a private collection in Lower Austria. Condition: Good condition with minor wear, casting irregularities, minor obvious losses, dents, nicks, and light scratches, remnants of soldering to the lower section, and remnants of pigment. Possibly once part of a larger setting.Weight: 484 g Dimensions: Height 15.1 cmManjushri flanked by Mahakala and Ganapati (Ganesha) is a rare triad which may be specific to Nepal. Manjushri is depicted in an unusual four-arm form, holding a rosary and a book (the Prajnaparamita tantra) in his upper hands, a lotus and a pot in the main ones. To his right, Ganapati is seated on a rat and holds his traditional attributes: a rosary, an elephant goad, his broken tusk, a bowl of sweets. On the other side, Mahakala is shown in his four-arm form, seated on a victim and holding a drum (instead of a sword) and a ritual staff in his upper hands, and a flaying knife and a skull cup in the main ones.Literature comparison:Compare a related Nepalese bronze figure of Vaishravana, in a private collection and illustrated by Jeff Watt on Himalayan Art Resources, item number 10843. Note the similar rounded form of the base and mandorla.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Bonhams San Francisco, 27 June 2017, lot 8024Estimate: USD 5,000 or approx.
