拍品描述
Tibetan-Chinese. Finely cast, seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus throne with a beaded edge. The primary hands are held in anjali mudra close to the chest, while the secondary hands are raised to the shoulders in vitarka mudra, one holding a flower. The deity is adorned with beaded jewelry and wears the flayed skin of a mythical deer (krishnasara) draped over the left shoulder, a symbol of benevolence (maitri), a voluminous dhoti with foliate-incised hems, and a billowing scarf around the shoulders and arms, cascading to the base. The serene, downcast expression is framed by studded circular earrings and a separately made five-pointed diadem, securing the hair, which is styled in a topknot surmounted by the head of Amitabha. The original copper seal plate is finely engraved with the yin-yang symbol above a crossed vajra emblem.Provenance: From an old private collection in Vienna, Austria, and thence by descent in the family. An old inventory label to the base, '15'. Condition: Good condition with expected old wear and casting irregularities, some rubbing and minor losses to gilt, particularly to the hands and face indicating prolonged worship within the culture. Sealed.Weight: 482 g Dimensions: Height 11 cmExpert's note: Shadakshari Lokeshvara is the four-armed manifestation of the great bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara and is often regarded as the patron deity of Tibet, with the Dalai Lamas considered his earthly incarnations. This form of Avalokiteshvara is particularly revered within the Gelukpa order of Tibetan Buddhism, which was favored by the Qing court. The deity's principal hands are held before the heart in anjali mudra, the gesture of respectful salutation, while the two outer hands hold a bodhi bead from a rosary (missing in the present lot), symbolizing enlightenment, and a lotus flower, representing purity. Amitabha emerges from the hair, signifying Avalokiteshvara's spiritual lineage and the wisdom of all Buddhas. The worship of Shadakshari Lokeshvara dates back to at least the 11th century in eastern India.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's Hong Kong, 30 June 2020, lot 6003 Price: HKD 75,000 or approx.
