A GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF AMITAYUS, QIANLONG PERIOD

China, 1736-1795. The figure is finely cast seated in dhyanasana on a rectangular base, the hands in dhyana mudra and dressed in a jeweled necklace and robes draped over the left shoulder leaving the right exposed. The face is cast with a pensive expression beneath hair pulled up into an elaborate coiffure behind a five-point foliate crown.Provenance: From a private estate in Paris, France. French trade, acquired from the above. Condition: The statue lacks its throne and mandorla. The figure itself is good condition with some wear and expected casting irregularities, light warping, few dents, rubbing and losses to gilt, minor nicks, small losses, light surface scratches. Remnants of ancient pigment.Weight: 490 g Dimensions: Height 13.9 cmExpert's note:Amitayus was among the most popular deities from the Tibetan Buddhist pantheon in the Qing dynasty, particularly in the Qianlong period. The present lot belongs to a group of similarly cast gilt-bronze Amitayus figures, commissioned in large numbers by the Qianlong Emperor for the occasion of his mother the Empress Dowager Chongqing's 60th, 70th, and 80th birthdays.
