Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence report issued by Oxford Authentication on 19 February 2025, based on sample no. C125b97, sets the firing date of the two samples taken between 1500 and 2400 years ago, consistent with the dating of the present lot. A copy of the report accompanies the lot.China, 25-220. The recumbent canine with its head turned to the side, ears pricked, and mouth agape. Openings are present at the ears and mouth, while the paws extend forward. The tail is flat-shaped, and the hollow body is covered in an even dark amber glaze.Provenance: The estate of Dr. Horacio Fabrega, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Offered at Freeman's, March 16th 2009, Lot 434, with an estimate of USD 12,000, or approx. EUR 17,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing, and sold in an after-sale transaction to a noted local collector. Thence by descent in the family. Dr. Horacio Fabrega (1934-2022) was a psychiatrist, medical anthropologist and art collector. Fabrega met his wife Joan in an art history class at Penn university, sparking a lifelong passion for art. Together, they delved into diverse artistic traditions, with a special emphasis on Asian art that deepened their cultural understanding and appreciation.Condition: Good condition, with ancient wear, commensurate with age. Some glaze flaking, small chips, cracks, and few restored areas with associated touch-ups. All as expected from authentic Han dynasty excavations.
