拍品描述
Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 19 February 2025, based on sample number C125c29, sets the firing date of the two samples taken from one horse between 1400 and 2100 years ago, consistent with the dating above. A copy of the report accompanies this lot.China, 202 BC-220 AD. Each standing foursquare with the head slightly turned inquisitively, the face modeled with a long snout, pricked ears, bulging eyes, and flaring nostrils, the mouth slightly agape, the long mane neatly incised. (2)Provenance: From a private collection in the United Kingdom.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Ancient wear, signs of weathering and soiling from burial, small losses, firing cracks, encrustations, repairs and touchups as generally expected from Han dynasty excavations. Small holes from sample drilling.Weight: 565 g and 567 g Dimensions: Height 20 cm and 19 cm, Length 19.3 cm (each)Elaborate burials are a defining aspect of traditional Chinese culture and grave goods provide us extraordinary amounts of information about how the ancient Chinese lived. The horse-riding military, which began in the 3rd century BC, grew rapidly during the 2nd century BC, to meet the challenge of horse-riding peoples threatening China along the northern frontier. These large, powerful, horses were new to China. Traded for luxurious silk, they were the first major import to China from the newly established trade corridor to the Mediterranean world. Within a few years, the marvelous Arabian steeds had become immensely popular with military and aristocracy alike and upper-class tombs began to be filled with images of these great horses for use in the afterlife.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's Amsterdam, 4 November 2003, lot 232Price: EUR 7,767 or approx.
