拍品描述
China, 1127-1279. Delicately potted with shallow rounded sides rising from a low foot, the interior finely molded with two phoenixes flying amid blossoming peony and lotus, covered overall with a grayish-white glaze save for the mouth and foot rims exposing the fine white body.Provenance: Collection of Solomon and Hannah Shahmoon, New Rochelle, New York, and thence by descent. The base with an old label inscribed with an inventory number '579'. Solomon E. Shahmoon (1893-1987) emigrated to Shanghai from Baghdad in 1911 and became a renowned property developer and financier during the peak of the early 20th century building boom and the city's development as the major commercial center in Asia. His success was capped in 1927 by the construction of the eight-story Shahmoon Building dominating the Bund and sited above their Art Deco masterpiece, The Capitol Theater. In 1928 Mr. Shahmoon made Paris his residence, visiting Shanghai periodically to invest in property. In 1938 he re-visited Baghdad where he met and married Hannah, and the couple settled in Paris where their first daughter was born. The Shahmoons collected art, objects, carpets, and furniture, and at the end of 1939, left Paris ahead of the Nazis for New York, where they settled permanently, first in Manhattan and then in New Rochelle. Much of their collection from both Shanghai and Paris was eventually reunited with them in New Rochelle, where they raised their four daughters in their large, Spanish-style stucco home. Condition: Good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities including craquelure, glaze lines, and a firing crack to the interior. Few thin hairlines.Weight: 125.5 g Dimensions: Diameter 16 cmExpert's note: The present bowl was probably made at the Jingdezhen kilns in Jiangxi province, in imitation of Ding wares produced in Quyang county, Hebei province.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related Ding-type shallow bowl, dated to the Southern Song dynasty, molded with phoenixes and flowers and covered in a similar cream white glaze, illustrated by K.C. Ho, Song Ceramics from the Kwan Collection, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 1994, pp. 296-297, no.130. Compare a Qingbai-glazed bowl, Song dynasty, decorated with a similar combination of phoenix, flowers and key-fret patterns, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures from the Palace Museum. Ceramics of the Song Dynasty, vol. 33, Hong Kong, 1996, p. 202, no.184.Auction result comparison:Type: Related Auction: Bonhams London, 13 May 2021, lot 4Estimate: GBP 6,000 or approx. EUR 9,400 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing: A ding-type 'lotus pond and phoenix' shallow bowl, Southern Song dynastyExpert remark: Compare the similar form, decoration to the well and sides, the color of the glaze, and size (17.8 cm).
