For the past 57 years, this painting has been in a private Connecticut collection, however the painting's history in the United States can be traced back a century, and the seals of Chinese collectors bringing it back to the 17th century. Prior to the current collection, the painting belonged to Theodore Francis Green, the former Governor of Rhode Island (1933-1937) and United States Senator (1937-1961). In addition to being a successful politician who served until he has 92 years old, Green was well known as an avid collector of Chinese paintings, and his estate was disbursed in a series of sales in 1967-1968. Green acquired the painting in 1929 from Long Sang Ti Chinese Curios Co Ltd. Long Sang Ti was among several dealers in Chinese art in New York City in the early 20th century, their gallery located on Fifth Avenue from 1902.
Tang Yin had two approaches in his figure painting, one used broad brushwork, inspired by Wu Wei (1459-1509) and Zhou Chen (ca. 1460-ca 1535-36), and the other, as exemplified by this scroll, relied on fine outlines and was drawn from the techniques of Southern Song dynasty artists. The sensitivity and finesse used to describe the sitter's face compliments the paintings placid tone, and the pair of red-crowned cranes endows the painting with an auspicious note.
