Hailing from Jingyang, Xi'an Prefecture, Jing Laigong was a military official of the late Ming dynasty. The epitaph stone from the joint tomb of Jing Laigong and his wife, Madame Zhang, has been excavated, with the inscription published in Li Baiqin , Hedong Chutu Muzhi Lu (Epitaphs Excavated from Hedong), no. 45. Composed by his colleague He Dongxu (1531-1606), the epitaph records Jing Laigong's position as Shaanxi buzhengshisi zuocanzheng (Left Administration Vice Commissioner of Shaanxi Province). It also notes that he was born on the tenth day of the sixth month of the xinmao year (1531) of Jiajing's reign, and passed away on the twenty-ninth day of the first month in the bingwu year (1606) during Wanli's reign, living to the age of seventy-six. Much of this information corresponds with the inscription on the present lot, which was inscribed by one of Jing Laigong's sons Zhouru, whose name is also recorded in the epitaph.
