Steven Malum Erickson had a lifelong interest in Chinese culture and painting. Afforded an opportunity to visit China in 1984 and 1986 as a student at the University of Minnesota Duluth, Mr. Erickson attended the inaugural United States / Zhejiang Meishu Xueyuan, now Zhongguo Meishu Xueyuan, (Chinese Academy of Arts) short-term Training Programs for the study of Chinese landscape painting in Hangzhou, under the guidance of esteemed artists such as Lu Yanshou and Sha Menghai (1900-1992). Thereafter, Mr. Erickson made numerous trips to China in the years that followed, and at his home in Seattle, he hosted Chinese artists who visited the United States. Among his friends in the art world, Xu Bing (b. 1955), Gu Wenda (1955-2008) and Wang Dongling (b. 1945) were all welcomed to his Pacific Northwest home. In 2018, he was invited as a representative of international alumni to speak at the opening ceremony of the exhibition "All Art Under the Sun: The 40th Anniversary of Education for Overseas Students at the China Academy of Art (1978-2018)." Returning to his alma mater for the occasion was a deeply moving experience for him. Mr. Erickson passed away in July 2024 at the age of 81.
