Throughout Zhang Daqian's long career, the artist perpetually sought to merge orthodoxy with innovation, expanding the boundaries of Chinese painting in daring and unconventional ways. Whereas his time in Dunhuang broadened his vision to the early roots of the Chinese figural painting tradition, and his long stretches of time away from China afforded him the opportunity to explore new, non-Chinese media beyond ink and color on silk or paper. His decade in California proved to be an especially fruitful time in this regard.
The present lot, a folio of six lithographs, were created by Zhang Daqian in collaboration with W.B. Fountain and Editions Press in San Francisco. Whereas the medium of lithography originated in Europe and was only introduced to China in the late 19th century, few Chinese artists embraced the method for its expressive potential. Fountain commissioned Zhang Daqian to create two series of prints, the first an edition of 90 in 1973 and this second edition of 125 in 1974, which included an introduction by Professor Michael Sullivan. In the 1991 exhibition and catalog Challenging the Past: the Paintings of Chang Dai-chien, Shen Fu recounts how the septuagenarian artist enthusiastically delved into this new mode of expression.
Another set of prints from the second series is reproduced in Michael Sullivan Modern Chinese Art, The Khoan and Michael Sullivan Collection, Oxford, 2001, p. 154 (one illustrated). A complete suite of six lithographs with the original portfolio and Sullivan introduction is rare to come to auction. Number 64 in the series, also an intact set was sold in our San Francisco salesroom 28 June 2016.
