A STUCCO FIGURE OF A BODHISATTVA, ANCIENT REGION OF GANDHARA, 4TH-5TH CENTURY

The slender figure modeled with broad shoulders, hands held firmly to the front, dressed in a cloak draped gently over the form, adorned with necklaces and decorated with blossoming flowers to the arms, the face with a serene expression marked by downcast almond-shaped eyes below elegantly arched brows, above an aquiline nose and pursed bow-shaped lips, the neatly piled wavy hair framing face.

In 1976 she established her own clothing company Mary McFadden Inc. and in 2012 she published a book titled ‘Mary McFadden: A Lifetime of Design, Collecting, and Adventure’.

In addition to schist, stucco was a popular medium for sculpture in the ancient Gandhara region. A lightweight, malleable ware, stucco readily lends itself to delicate detailing and sensitive modeling, conveying an emotional presence exemplified in this fine figure of a bodhisattva.
