In Vietnamese culture, the eagle and snake are powerful symbols representing opposing yet complementary forces. The eagle, admired for its strength, sharp vision, and ability to soar high, is often seen as a symbol of leadership, courage, and protection. It embodies the qualities of a guardian spirit, watching over and safeguarding the land. The snake, on the other hand, symbolizes wisdom, transformation, and adaptability. Respected for its ability to shed its skin and renew itself, it is often connected to the earth and the cycle of life and death. Together, these animals represent a balance between power and wisdom, reflecting the harmonious duality seen in Vietnamese folklore and spiritual beliefs.

This motif also appears in many other cultures around the world, often carrying similar symbolic meaning. In Aztec mythology, the eagle devouring a snake is a key symbol, representing the balance of life and power, a motif now famously depicted on the Mexican flag but already found in pre-Columbian art which frequently depicts the relationship between birds and serpents, reinforcing themes of cosmic order and the interplay between heavenly and earthly forces. Byzantine art also features eagles as symbols of imperial power and divine authority, while serpents often represent danger or the forces of chaos that must be overcome. In Greek mythology, Zeus is associated with the eagle, symbolizing authority and strength, while the snake often embodies wisdom or danger. Similarly, in Hindu mythology, Garuda battles the serpent-like Nagas, representing the eternal struggle between good and evil. Across cultures, the eagle-and-snake motif reflects the duality of power and wisdom, sky and earth, or life and death, emphasizing a universal theme of balance and harmony.
