China. Of archaistic form, the cylindrical body supported on three ruyi-shaped feet rising to a flat rim. The body carved with two bowstrings and incised with peony blossoms borne on leafy vines and framed by bands of rings. Covered overall in a finely crackled ivory-white glaze.

The base stamped with a square seal mark.

Provenance: English trade. Acquired from a private estate in Oxford.
Condition: Old wear, traces of use, firing flaws, glaze recesses, scattered hairlines and cracks, and a small chip to the inner rim with associated repair. Overall presenting quite well.

Weight: 1,815 g

The shape of the present lot was inspired by archaic bronze containers, lian, which were among the ritual implements aimed to present food and drink offerings to the ancestors during the Han dynasty.
