拍品描述
A BLACK STONE STELE DEPICTING AN ENTHRONED MAHAVIRA ATTENDED BY A YAKSHA AND YAKSHI, PALA PERIOD, 11TH-12TH CENTURY

Eastern India. Exquisitely carved, the yaksha and yakshi seated in lalitasana on a cushioned plinth mounted on a rectangular pedestal with devotees to the front, each figure with one hand outstretched and placed on the knee, all below the nimbate Jina seated in dhyanasana atop a cushioned throne carved in relief with a wheel flanked by inward facing lions, his hands held in dhyanamudra above the lap.

Provenance: From the private collection of Jean Dumoulin, Overijse, Belgium, acquired in Bangkok during the mid-1990s. A copy of a provenance statement, written and signed by Jean Dumoulin, dated 2 August 2024, and confirming the above, accompanies this lot. Jean Dumoulin developed a great passion for Asian culture as a young man, and frequently traveled the Asian continent. His private collection of Asian works of art comprises sculptures and objects he acquired in Burma, Thailand, and on the European market.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, obvious losses, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, natural imperfections, small nicks, and chips.

Dimensions: Height 46 cm

Identified by the pair of inward facing lions beneath him, this Svetambara stele depicts Mahavira, the last of the twenty-four tirthankharas, or exemplars, of the Jain faith. Born into a royal household in Bihar around 599 BCE, Mahavira later renounced his upbringing in pursuance of a spiritual awakening.

The wheel in between the lions references his teachings which form the basis of Jain philosophy: ahimsa (non-violence), aparigraha (non-attachment), asteya (no theft), brahmacharya (chastisty), and satya (truthfulness).
