A LARGE AND IMPORTANT SILVER- AND COPPER-INLAID BRONZE JAIN SHRINE, DATED 1207

Western India. Well cast, the central deity seated in dhyanasana on a cushioned throne supported by elephants and lions with a goddess at center and flanked by a yakshi and yaksha, surrounded by seated and standing figures of jinas, attendants, and yaksha and yakshis. His eyes and srivatsa are inlaid with silver, his cushion with copper lozenge designs, the throneback and arch decorated with further inlays. The arched throne back with elephants flanking a canopy below the kalasha-form finial.

Inscriptions: The back with a dedicatory inscription in Devanagari script, dating the present lot to Samvat 1263 (corresponding to 1207).

Provenance: From a private collection in Austria.
Condition: Good condition with wear, predominantly from centuries of worship within the culture. Few minute nicks, casting flaws, warping, occasional light scratches, minor dents, tiny losses, and rubbing. Minor expected losses to inlays. The bronze with a fine, naturally grown, smooth patina.
