Marks: Qiao Commune (Commune Property Mark, branded in the 1960s-1970s) This pair of chairs is yokeback in design with arms that end in a 'tear drop' design. It is very unusual to find full height yokeback chairs in this delicate design made in jumu. The tall yokeback chair seems to have been a far more common design in the north of China, where large robust furniture was always prized. These chairs, made in Jiangsu seem to combine the elegant refinement of southern of "Suzhou Style" furniture with the larger scale more common in the north. Provenance 1. The Tamsen Ann Ziff Collection former owner of Wu Bin's 10 Views of a Rock Masterpiece One of remarkable moment with the collector Marcus Said: When we sold the pair of Jumu Yokeback chairs, the clients chose them over a pair of Huanghuali ones, because the loved the slender members and sinuous elegance of the design. Similarly, with the Yumu Southern Official hat chairs, the combination of bold design and timber imbue them with a raw power and strength that is almost impossible to find in Huanghuali examples.

What do you think of the antique finewood furniture in the new generation collector position? Marcus Said: I have always been a big fan and advocate of the best Chinese Furniture made from other woods. Of course, I love Huanghuali and Zitan. They represent the highest expression of the Classical Style. However, because the materials were so rare and expensive, the designs of the furniture usually follow fairly traditional classical designs often with small changes or evolutions. That is one of the greatest strengths of Chinese Furniture, the designs evolve very slowly over long periods. With other woods, many of which were indigenous to China, and therefore less expensive and easier to get, there is often a little more freedom of design. You see some more pronounced regional characteristics. The makers sometimes make some bolder choices. You also get a much wider timespan. If Huanghuali and Zlitan became more readily available after 1570, other woods had been used for centuries before and continued to be used. To make an analogy it might be the difference between a finished oil painting
