拍品描述
A RARE ANTLER SEAL NETSUKE OF A SINIU

Unsigned
Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Boldly carved as a recumbent siniu with the legs drawn in and long neck raised high. The goat-like mythical being with a long beard and two curled horns. Asymmetrical and generously excavated himotoshi through one side of the body. Seated on an oval base inscribed with the seal character rai. The antler bearing a fine patina.

HEIGHT 5.7 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and typical natural flaws to the material.

The siniu (Chinese xiniu) is a goat-like creature with horns, often regarded as one of the varied types of kirin.

Seal netsuke of siniu are often carved from ivory, antler is a rather unusual material for this type.

A closely related example from the W. L. Behrens collection is illustrated in Joly, Henri (1908) Legend in Japanese Art, opp. p.279.

Auction comparison:
Compare a related ivory seal netsuke, dated to the late 18th, at Christie’s, Japanese Ceramics & Works of Art, 8 November 2007, London, lot 7 (sold for GBP 6,875).
