AN ANTLER NETSUKE OF HOTEI, ATTRIBUTED TO TSUNEMASA

Attributed to Tsunemasa, unsigned
Japan, Kyoto, early to mid-18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Carved from a tubular section of antler plugged at one end, the jovial figure standing with his knees slightly bent under the weight of his heavy treasure sack and lifting the hem of his robe as if walking through water. The corpulent figure wearing robes that fall open at the chest exposing his rotund belly, his mouth opened in an exaggerated expression of glee typical of the artist Tsunemasa. The back with a singular, large himotoshi extending out from the hollow interior between the legs.

HEIGHT 6.8 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and typical ‘natural flaws’.

Jiri M. Mestecky identifies several features typical of the artist Tsunemasa in his article The Enigmatic Tsunemasa (2015, INSJ 35/2, p. 25-26), which help establish a clear attribution of the present lot to the artist. For one, the vast majority of Tsunemasa netsuke are unsigned with only a few examples of signed pieces here and there. Not only this, but the style and material, almost always antler or ivory, are fairly homogenous. The author identifies one of Tsunemasa’s key stylistic elements, what he dubs the “Tsunemasa face.” The exaggerated face with open mouth and pudgy cheeks on the present lot is a coherent example of Tsunemasa’s typical style.
