HIROSADA: A FINE SHIBUICHI TSUBA WITH BIRDS AND PINE

By Hirosada (Kotei), signed Tsusoku Hirosada 通足弘貞
Japan, c. 1800-1850, late Edo period (1615-1868)

Of nagamarugata form, with hitsu-ana for a kogai and a kozuka (plugged in shakudo), the nakago hitsu-ana with suaka (copper) sekigane. The smoothly polished ground skillfully engraved in kebori, katakiribori, and shishiaibori and finely inlaid in suaka, gold, and shakudo takazogan to depict a woodpecker perched on the trunk of an old gnarled pine with a long-tailed bird in flight cawing above, the tree continuing on the reverse above a meandering stream with small rocks and bamboo shoots on the riverbank. The recto signed TSUSOKU HIROSADA.

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear.

Hirosada is listed in Robert E. Haynes, The Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists, p. 289 (H01386.0). He was born in Mito, Hitachi Province, and later moved to Edo. Hirosada was the son of Hirotoshi and is said to be a student of Tamagawa Yoshinaga.
