HOJU: A SHIBUICHI TSUBA WITH SWALLOWS AND PRUNUS

Japan, c. 1850, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of aorigata form with a raised rounded rim and two kozuka hitsu-ana, finely worked in shakudo, silver, and gold takazogan with two swallows flying below a blossoming prunus branch from which two petals gently fall, the reverse subtly carved in relief with kebori depicting a sparse mountain and river landscape accentuated with coral branches, bamboo leaves, and dew drops neatly inlaid in gold takazogan. The recto signed HOJU.

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear.

Hoju is listed in Robert E. Haynes, The Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists, p. 322 (H01600.0). He was a student of Murata Hiroyuki.
