拍品描述
KIKUGAWA HISAHIDE: AN IRON KOZUKA OF RIHAKU

By Kikugawa Hisahide (c. 1748-1825), signed Kikugawa Nanpo 菊川 南甫 with seal
Japan, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The blackened iron kozuka finely worked in gold, silver, suaka (refined copper), as well as takabori to depict the legendary poet Rihaku (Li Bai) captured in a moment of serene contemplation as he reads by moonlight. In the scene, Rihaku extends his book through the window of his humble hut, which sits nestled amid lush, detailed pine trees, evoking a sense of quiet solitude. The reverse in stippled gold shakudo. Signed to the lower part of one narrow side KIKUGAWA NANPO and with a seal.

LENGTH 9.8 cm
WEIGHT 36.4 g

Condition: Good condition with minor surface wear and light signs of corrosion.

The present kozuka depicts a scene from one of the most recited poems in Chinese literature, Li Bai’s ‘Quiet Night Thoughts’ in which moonlight near his bed invokes thoughts of home.

Kikugawa Hisahide (c. 1748-1825) is listed in the Haynes Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists on p. 302 (H 01475.0). He worked and the art name Nanpo was adopted later in his life. Hisahide was a student of Chizuka Hisanori (H 01508.0) and Kiku Muneyoshi (H 06375.0), and he was related by marriage to the painter and print maker Kikugawa Eizan.
