Okawa Teikan (1828-1898), who used the art name (go) Hoen, was born at Mito in Hitachi Province. He became a retainer of the Mito Tokugawa Daimyo and of the Bakufu (shogunate) in Edo. He was a prolific artist who created exceptionally fine tsuba, many of his works now being stored and exhibited in Western Museums. The artist is listed in Haynes Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists on p. 1895 (H 09521.0).

Hanabusa Itcho (1652-1724) was a Japanese painter, calligrapher, and haiku poet. He originally trained in the Kano style, under Kano Yasunobu, but ultimately rejected that style and became a literato (bunjin). He was also known as Hishikawa Waō and by several other names.
