A RARE SHIBUICHI KOZUKA WITH A NANBAN AND HIS DOG

Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The shibuichi kozuka worked in gold, silver, shibuichi, shakudo, and suaka (refined copper) takazogan and hirazogan, depicting a caricaturized images of a Nanban (Portuguese, literally “Southern Barbarian”) depicted with a typical hat and wild beard, holding the reigns of his fierce dog, the animal looking up baring teeth and wearing an ornate collar, all against a superb nanako ground. The reverse finely polished.

Condition: Excellent condition with minor surface wear and slight tarnishing at the reverse.
Provenance: From an Australian private collection of sword fittings, collected over centuries with a discerning eye for quality and comprising mostly exceptionally fine kozuka from the noted Hamano and Goto schools.
