Dim.: ca. 48 x 30 x 5 cm (each)

Provenance: The collection of Baron and Baroness Julien van Caloen de Basseghem, Belgium.

"Verheerlykt Vlaandre" is the Dutch translation of "Flandria Illustrata," the renowned work by the Ypres canon Antonius Sanderus (1586-1664). This work is a testament to the flourishing cartography and topography of the 17th century. Originally published in Latin in two volumes in 1641 and 1644 by Joan and Cornelius Blaeu in Amsterdam, "Flandria Illustrata" provides detailed descriptions of the towns, villages, abbeys, and castles of the former County of Flanders, along with biographies of its counts and bishops. Sanderus extensively utilized older publications for his texts, while most illustrations were newly created by draftsmen and surveyors he commissioned.

The Dutch version, "Verheerlykt Vlaandre," was first published in 1732 and subsequently reprinted in three volumes over three years. This edition is treasured as an irreplaceable historical source, as many of the depicted places and buildings have since changed beyond recognition or disappeared entirely.

"Verheerlykt Vlaandre" continues to be a vital historical document, offering a window into the architectural and geographical landscape of 17th-century Flanders.
