A GILT-BRONZE ‘THREE FRIENDS OF WINTER’ TRIPOD CENSER, SAWASA WARE, 17TH-18TH CENTURY

Finely cast with a lobed body supported on three slender legs and surmounted by a short neck with a galleried rim. The body decorated with foliate panels enclosing pine, bamboo, and prunus against a ring-punched ground, and applied with two beast-mask handles, all below two bands of lotus petals encircling the shoulder, the rim incised with a band of key-fret.

With an associated wood cover finely carved in openwork with scrolling vines and surmounted by a glazed ceramic finial, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century or earlier.

Provenance: From a private collection in New England, United States.
Condition: Good condition with old wear, casting flaws, rubbing to gilding, small nicks, minor dents, small casting cracks, and a minor old repair to one foot.

Weight: 434.1 g
Dimensions: Length 12.1 cm (across handles)

The 'Three Friends of Winter' motif is frequently used across all mediums in Chinese art. Comprised of pine, bamboo and prunus, this motif is emblematic of the Confucian virtues of fortitude and resilience. As the pine and bamboo are evergreen plants and the prunus, a plant that has lived for a long time, the three together are also an auspicious symbol of longevity.

Sawasa describes a distinctive style of metalwork produced in Asia during the 17th and 18th centuries. The base material was a copper-gold alloy, much like the Japanese shakudo. Sawasa articles usually appear in the form of all kinds of containers like tobacco boxes, but also cups and saucers, ewers, and other items for which the material is suited. The production of Sawasa items is primarily associated with Nagasaki, but various records suggest there was also a significant production in both Canton (Guangzhou) and Tonkin (Hanoi). The clientele were mainly the Dutch colonial expat community, who commissioned these items for their own use and to some extent for trade with Europe.
