拍品描述
A MASSIVE BRONZE ARCHAISTIC JAR, LEI, 17TH-18TH CENTURY

China. Heavily cast in the form of an archaic vessel with the ovoid body supported on a tall spreading foot and surmounted by a rounded shoulder with waisted neck and galleried rim, flanked by dragon-shaped handles. Finely decorated with a band of pendent blades enclosing phoenixes, below taotie masks to the body and neck, the shoulder with dragons separated by whorl motifs, the foot with taotie masks separated by short flanges, all against leiwen grounds.

Provenance: French trade, acquired from a French private collection.
Condition: Very good condition with old wear, nicks, scratches, small dents, and phosphorescent areas around the handles, stemming from casting irregularities and flaws inherent to manufacturing. The interior with encrustations.

Weight: 12.2 kg
Dimensions: Height 51.5 cm

Literature comparison:
Compare a larger archaistic bronze vessel with similar dragon-form handles, dated to the Ming dynasty, 17th century, from the Estate of Frederic Mueller and sold at Christie’s East, New York, 5 June 1990, lot 425, and subsequently at Christie’s Hong Kong, 4 October 2018, lot 74.

Auction result comparison:
Type: Closely related
Auction: Christie’s New York, 16 March 2015, lot 3289
Price: USD 12,500 or approx. EUR 15,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing
Description: A large archaistic bronze jar, lei, 17th-18th century
Expert remark: Compare the closely related form and manner of casting with similar taotie, beast, and whorl designs. Note the related size (48.2 cm).
