拍品描述
A RARE GILT-LACQUERED BRONZE FIGURE OF GUANYIN, SONG TO YUAN DYNASTY

China, 960-1368. Boldly cast seated in dhyanasana, the hands lowered in dhyana mudra, wearing loose robes opening at the chest to reveal an undergarment secured at the waist with a four-looped knot, the serene face with downcast eyes, flanked by long pendulous earlobes, the hair pulled up into a high chignon secured by a tiara under the tall distinctive cowl terminating in a ruyi head to the back. The face and body accentuated with a flesh-colored lacquer, the robe and cowl gilt.

Provenance: From a private collection, Middletown, Rhode Island, U.S.
Condition: Good condition with wear and casting flaws, signs of weathering and erosion, corrosion, rubbing and losses to gilt and lacquer, nicks, scratches.

Weight: 545 g
Dimensions: Height 13.2 cm

Expert’s note:
This finely cast figure’s unusually symmetrical cowl and formalized embellishments, such as the ruyi-head to the back and the cross-like knot below the chest, are indicative of the Song dynasty. See, for example, a Qingbai figure of Guanyin, dated to the Southern Song dynasty, at Christie’s Hong Kong, 1 June 2011, lot 3726.
