拍品描述
A LARGE GILT AND LACQUERED BRONZE FIGURE OF THE DAOIST IMMORTAL TIANGUAN, MING DYNASTY

Expert’s note: The crisply painted details to the bronze face like the arched brows, dark pupils, pointy beard, and gently pursed lips are extremely well-preserved, which is exceedingly rare for a Ming bronze of this kind.

China, 16th-17th century. Finely cast, the Heaven Official seated in ‘European style’ on a red and black-lacquered throne, holding a hu tablet with both hands in front of his chest, wearing loose-fitting pleated robes with neatly incised foliate borders, the official's hat decorated with a mountain and waves and secured with a pin, his face superbly painted and cast with a serene expression, thick brows, and neatly incised beard.

Provenance: M. C. Ghurras Collection.
Condition: Good condition with wear and casting flaws, minor losses and flaking to gilt and lacquer, minor structural cracks, nicks, scratches, minor dents, tiny losses. Old repairs with metal fills possibly inherent to the manufacture, minor touchups here and there.

Weight: 6,457 g
Dimensions: Height 43.7 cm

The present figure most likely represents Tianguan, the Heaven Official, one of the Three High Officials (sanguan) of Daoism, who emerged in the Daoist pantheon as early as the late Han dynasty as the judges of human fate. His role is to give people their alloted share of luck and happiness. He is also sometimes identified with Fuxing, the star god of Happiness, and associated with the Lantern Festival, which fell on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month to celebrate the end of winter and the coming of spring. For the occasion, grand ceremonies were set up by the emperor to invoke blessings and from at least the Ming dynasty, a play named Tianguan Cifu 天官賜福 and featuring Tianguan as the main character enacted the bestowal of heavenly gifts on worthy individuals.
