A PEACHBLOOM-GLAZED PORCELAIN FIGURE OF BUDDHA PARINIRVANA, QING DYNASTY

Experts’s note: In Buddhism, Parinirvana refers to nirvana-after-death, the final release that occurs when someone who has attained nirvana during their lifetime passes away. It signifies liberation from Samsara, karma, and the cycle of rebirth, as well as the dissolution of the skandhas. In some Mahayana texts, notably the Maha Parinirvana Sutra, Parinirvana is described as the realm of the Buddha's eternal true Self.

China, 19th century or earlier. Finely modeled in a reclining pose, the Buddha rests his head on his right hand, with the other arm extended along his body. He is draped in a long, flowing monastic robe with meticulously carved folds, all covered in a rich peachbloom glaze with distinctive copper-green accents. The face, arms, and legs are finished in a pale blue glaze, creating a striking contrast.

Provenance: French trade. Acquired from a private in Bordeaux, France.
Condition: Very good condition with expected old wear and firing flaws including uneven glazing and dark spots, minuscule nibbling and fritting to edges.

Weight: 251.6 g
Dimensions: Length 18 cm

This image depicts the Buddha's passage into Nirvana. Reclining on a royal couch in the sala grove of the Malla kings, near the Hirannavati River, he prepares to depart, and delivers his final words: "Everything is subject to change; strive on without delay." At dawn the following day, he passes into the great Nirvana.
