A LARGE DEHUA FIGURE OF A CROWNED GUANYIN, LATE QING DYNASTY

China, late 19th-early 20th century. Delicately potted and sensitively modeled, the Goddess of Mercy standing atop swirling waves issuing from the mouth of a carp, her right hand raised and clutched around a willow branch, while the left is lowered and clasped around the neck of a vase. Dressed elegantly in long flowing robes with billowing scarves falling down her shoulders, the deity is richly adorned with beaded jewelry suspending cash coin pendants and foliate tassels.

The serene face with heavy-lidded eyes, arched brows, and bow-shaped lips, flanked by ears with pendulous lobes. The hair is neatly arranged in a tall, knotted chignon and gathered under an embellished crown centered by a figure of Amitabha Buddha seated amid flower heads and beaded strings.

Provenance: The private collection of Dr. Rainer Kreissl. An important South German private collection, acquired from the above before 1990. Dr. Rainer Josef Kreissl (1924-2005) was a German-Czech art collector, patron, and important donor. Born in Bohemia, Dr. Kreissl’s family was permitted to remain in Czechoslovakia after World War II because of his father’s efforts in smuggling jews out of the Third Reich. Dr. Kreissl studied business in ?atec and became an antiques dealer in the late 1950s. Due to his association with various foreign diplomats, Dr. Kreissl emigrated to West Germany after becoming a person of interest to the KGB. Dr. Kreissl continued to work as an antiques dealer, assembling an impressive collection which he donated to the various museums in the Czech Republic. In 1995, Dr. Kreissl received a honorary Doctorate from Charles University and was later awarded a honorary citizenship of the city of Prague. In 2001, Kreissl received the Czech Republic’s Medal of Merit. His broad collection can today be seen in the Thimble Museum, the National Gallery, and in Prague Castle.
Condition: Overall good condition, commensurate with size and age, showing minor wear and firing irregularities. Tiny stains, few hairlines, and some nibbling and tiny chips to the edges. Expected losses to extremities. Repairs and touchups to the vase.

Weight: 2,649 g
Dimensions: Height 51.2 cm

Guanyin, also known as the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, is venerated as the goddess of mercy and compassion. One of the most popular subjects in Chinese art, early representations portray the deity as male, but by the Qing dynasty, particularly in porcelain, she was depicted as a beautiful female. She is often depicted, as seen on the present figure, holding a willow leaf, the Buddhist symbol of both physical and spiritual healing.
