拍品描述
‘THREE HORSES’, EARLY QING DYNASTY

China, 17th-18th century. Ink, watercolors, and gouache on silk.

Finely painted with a horse grazing, its head lowered to the ground, its pale coat speckled with brown spots, while a white and brown horse gently entwine their necks in a graceful display of affection beneath a gnarled tree. The artist masterfully captured the delicate interaction between the animals, conveying both their playfulness and intimacy with subtle, lifelike brush strokes.

Provenance: From a private collection in France.
Condition: Overall good condition. Old wear, minor losses, scratches, small tears, soiling, and browning. One small section with an old repair.

Dimensions: Image size 44.2 x 32.5 cm, Size incl. frame 47.7 x 41 cm

Mounted and framed behind glass. (2)

In Chinese numerology, three is considered a positive number symbolizing harmony and growth, as it is associated with the idea of balance and completeness. Three horses are therefore a symbol of unity and harmony.

Literature comparison:
The positions of the white and brown horses are similar to those in a painting by Kano Shoun (1637-1702) in the Fukuoka City Museum.
