AN ALBUM WITH 7 “SCHOLARS” PAINTINGS BY GU LUO (1763-1837), DATED 1837

Gu Luo (1763-1837), also known as Ximei Jushi, was a native of Qiantang (now Hangzhou) in Zhejiang Province. He was a famous painter and noted calligrapher during the second half of the Qing dynasty. Gu was especially praised for his paintings of elegant ladies. In his later years, he developed a passion for painting scholars, literati, and their accompanying ladies, sometimes inspired by renowned Ming dynasty artists like Chen Hongshou (1598-1652). These works exhibit Gu Luo’s distinctive style, on occasion exaggerating his subjects' traits in a subtly satirical way (see auction comparison below).

China, 1837. Accordion album with seven leaves, each finely painted with ink on silk, the front and back covers of a richly grained dark wood. Depicting a scholar engaged in various activities, sometimes accompanied by a lady, a sage, or an attendant, all within river and mountain landscapes with gnarled trees and leafy shrubbery.

Inscriptions: Title slip on the album: ‘Gu xi mei renwu zhenji. Dingyou jia yue chong zhuang, jiao chuan pu an shu qian.’ (Gu Ximei Figures of Characters. Reissued in the month of Jiayue [November], Year Dingyou [1837], Labeled in Jiaochuan by Pu’an’). Two labels to the cover, ‘Painting No. 94, Name: In style of Gu Ximei's Figures, […]’ and ‘Export No.0722, Size: 7 1?2 X 9 1?2, Unit: B4’. Each painted leaf with a title and signed ‘Xi mei’ with seal ‘Gu Luo’. The last leaf additionally inscribed, ‘wuxu chun san yue, xi mei xue gu’ (In March of the spring of 1838, […]).

Provenance: From a private collection in the United Kingdom.
