A JIZHOU PAINTED ‘PRUNUS’ TEA BOWL, SONG DYNASTY

China, 960-1279. Well potted with gently rounded flaring sides, molded with a raised border around the interior rim and with a shallow recessed ‘finger groove’ below the lip on the exterior. Finely painted in buff-colored slip with a prunus design freely drawn in fluid brushstrokes over the brushstrokes over the mottled black-brown glaze continuing over to the exterior and stopping irregularly above the knife-cut small ring foot to reveal the buff ware.

Provenance: From a private estate in the United Kingdom.
Condition: Very good condition with old wear and firing flaws, light surface scratches, few minute chips and tiny losses to the foot and base, few minor glaze touchups.
