A CREAM-GLAZED AND PAINTED CIZHOU DISH, SOUTHERN SONG DYNASTY, 12TH CENTURY

China. Well potted with shallow rounded sides rising from a thick foot to a lipped rim, covered with a creamy white slip and freely painted to the interior with foliage between concentric circular bands and line borders, the exterior decorated with a rich streaked olive-tinted russet and blackish-brown glaze stopping irregularly before the foot, revealing the buff ware burnt to orange in the firing.

Provenance: The Collection of Mrs Beryl Joyce, United Kingdom. R & G McPherson Antiques, London, United Kingdom, 4 June 2008. Collection of Nicolas de la Mare Thompson, no. 316, acquired from the above and thence by descent. The base with an old label from R & G McPherson Antiques inscribed ‘B. Joyce Coll’. A copy of Nicolas de la Mare Thompson’s notes on the present lot, confirming the provenance and dating above, accompanies this lot. Robert McPherson is an English dealer and highly regarded expert in Chinese ceramics, a committee member of the Oriental Ceramic Society, and on the board of ‘Asian Art in London’. Nicholas de la Mare Thompson (1928-2010) was an English book publisher and important collector of Chinese ceramics. He was the grandson of author Walter de la Mare, and his brother was the highly respected Chinese art expert Julian Thompson, who was Chairman of Sotheby's Asia from 1992 to 2003. Nicholas de la Mare Thompson came from a family of collectors that included Richard de la Mare, one of the founding directors of Faber and Faber. The distinguished collector Sir Michael Butler was one of his oldest and closest friends. They both started collecting pots at an early age and throughout their lives, he, Julian, and Nicolas would meet to compare and discuss their purchases. He was a committee member of the Oriental Ceramics Society, which he believed should be run for the benefit of every member and open to all.
