AN INCISED WHITE GLAZED ‘PEONY’ BOTTLE VASE, KANGXI PERIOD

China, 1662-1722. The pear-shaped body yuhuchun ping rising from a short spreading foot to a waisted neck with a gently flaring mouth, masterfully carved to one side with a sprig of blossoming peony and a fluttering butterfly. Covered overall in a white glaze with a pale bluish tinge, darkening in the recesses.

Provenance: Bluett & Sons, London (according to label on base). Blitz Oriental Art, Amsterdam, Netherlands, 1994. A private collection in the United States, acquired from the above. A copy of the original invoice from Blitz Oriental Art, signed by H. J. Blitz, dated 10 June 1994, confirming the dating above, and stating a purchase price of USD 1,860 or EUR 3,700 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot. Three old labels to the base, ‘Bluett & Sons, London’, ‘Blitz Oriental Art, Amsterdam’, and ‘25’. Blitz Oriental Art was founded in 1978 by Dries and Diana Blitz in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Since its establishment, the business has sold many fine objects to collectors and museums worldwide. They are renowned for their early Chinese ceramics and works of art. Today, pieces bought from Blitz can be found in the British Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Palace Museum, Taipei, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Harvard University Art Museums, among others.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and firing irregularities including dark spots and pitting.

Weight: 254.1 g
Dimensions: Height 14.3 cm

The peony flower is recognized as a symbol of prosperity and good fortune. Peonies have long been represented in Chinese arts, but during the Kangxi period they would’ve been depicted on wares as symbolic wishes, conveying subtle messages of stability and longevity associated with the traditional imagery for the new dynasty.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related incised clair-de-lune spindle-shaped vase with a slightly rolled rim, Kangxi period, in the National Museum, Beijing.
